Rain thwarts both the Effingham Saturday teams in a weekend of disappointment
On a Saturday where fixtures were called off around the leagues, the Effingham 1st XI managed to play a truncated game away at Old Hamptonians 2nd XI.
First XI
Despite the inclement weather, the 1st XI won the toss and sent the opposition into bat.
Bowling well in tricky conditions, Effingham consistently broke threatening partnerships, pegging back the Old Hamptonians batting line up before they ever took the game away from them.
The main thorn in the side of Effingham took shape in the form of the opposition number four, who scored a battling 91 not out as he steered his side to 220-8 from their 46 overs.
Even with a slippery ball that wasn’t offering much to the Effingham seam attack, Dom Brown continued his fine vein of wicket-taking form, taking 3-31, while Alex Cooper and Oliver Jackson both bowled well, the former taking an economical 2-25 and the latter 1-47.
With more stoppages for the weather, Effingham were provided a revised target of 152 from 25 overs, and unfortunately never looked like chasing it down.
Although openers Cameron Walters (27) and Benji Thomas got the away side off to a steady start, the opposition first change bowlers then removed the heart of the Effingham top order, falling from 37-0 to 63-5 in no time.
From here the Ships limped to 100-7 from their innings, falling 51 runs short of parity in a match that they did well to play in the first place.
Second XI
The 2nd XI were meant to be welcoming Outlaws 2.0 1st XI on their continued hunt for a first win of the season. Unfortunately the rain didn’t stay clear of Effingham leaving no choice but to abandon the match.
Effingham 1st XI 100-7 (25 overs) lost to Old Hamptonians 2nd XI 220-8 by 51 runs (revised DLS target of 152)
Effingham 2nd XI v Outlaws 2.0 1st XI – match abandoned
