Effingham 1st XI cruise to victory over Camberley
Effingham 1st XI have moved up to fourth in Division 4 West of the Surrey Championship as they hammered an out of sorts Camberley 2nd XI. Unfortunately the Ships’ 2nd XI fell short against Weybridge 3rd XI, but picked up some vital bonus points as a consolation.
First XI
Losing the toss and being asked to bowl first at Camberley, Dominic Brown immediately had the Ships in the ascendency, picking up each of the first three opposition wickets for just 31 runs.
Following Brown’s (3 for 20) example, Alex Cooper (4 for 14) tore through the Camberley middle order, picking up four wickets in a ten over spell and, aided by the strong seam attack Effingham had fielded, was integral in bowling the home side out for just 91.
In response, despite losing the talismanic Benji Thomas for a rare single figure score, Effingham never looked in trouble chasing an under par score.
Helmed by Max James’ 39 not out at the top of the order, Effingham ran away victors with over 30 overs left to bat, keeping the Ships right in the mix at the top of the table.
Second XI
At Effingham, fortunes were slightly worse for the 2nd XI who were outplayed by a strong Weybridge 3rd XI.
Losing the toss and being asked to field first, Sam Cobb made an immediate inroad, bowling their opener to get Effingham on top.
Following this, came a frustrating period of play, where misfields and drops allowed Weybridge to tick through the gears, the other opening batsman putting a floundering Effingham attack to the sword with a well made 118.
At 181-2, things could have got far more out of hand but for a fantastic eight over spell from Mark Ransom. He picked up 6 for 52 and salvaged vital bowling bonus points as a result of this.
A chase of 287 was a long way off however, and the embattled 2nd XI made their aims of maximum losing bonus points clear, as Dom Carpenter (32) and Adam Burlison (34) put on a measured 66 for the second wicket.
Left at 93-4 after losing a couple of quick wickets, captain Ollie Wright (64*) and Freddie Fox (41), compiled an important partnership of 101 before Fox was dismissed, steering Effingham to the 200 mark that guaranteed maximum batting points.
Despite losing by 63 runs, the 2nd XI’s loss has kept them out of the relegation zone in seventh, just five points above the drop.
