2nd XI
Captain - 2nd XI
Asim Iqbal
The season never really gathered any momentum in 2018. Early season availability was poor due to the exam season, and so we struggled to field a competitive team. We even had to concede 2 games, which negated any momentum which we may have gained.
The first game of the season gave me what turned out to be false hope; at the half way stage of the game, having won the toss and inserted Long Ditton, we bowled them out for 81. I was therefore thinking optimistically about our prospects for the season. We had one of the strongest batting line ups you could wish for in the 2nd XI, and so in my mind, I had banked the twenty points for a win. In the end we were outplayed by a younger and stronger team, and found ourselves 12 or so runs short of the target. Long Ditton would end the season having earned a promotion.
The statistics for the season are below:
Played 14
Won 4
Lost 6
Drawn 1
Conceded 2
Opposition conceded 1
For the 2nd XI, it was a difficult season, hindered further by the travails of the 1st XI; if anyone in the 2nd XI played well, they were rightly called up to play in 1st XI, and by default, further weakening the 2XI. Congratulations are due to Joe Roberts and Ollie Tebbits, for earning promotions to 1st XI during the year, and the latter for being voted 2ndXI player of the year.
In the end, I was pleased that the 2nd XI avoided relegation, as this would have undone all the progress made in the last 2 seasons. 2019 may well be another challenging year, but it provides an opportunity for younger players in the club to step up and display their talent and ability.

“The 2018 season has set high expectations for next season and a firm base for the team to improve and kick on into 2019.”
The 2018 season promised to be difficult after the promotion to division 1 and the expected step up in the standard of cricket. With a team made up mostly of Colts, the talent shone and the season was a triumph. We lost only 4 games and finished in fourth place.
Outstanding performances include beating Dorking by 10 wickets, beating East Horsley by 8 wickets and drawing with eventual champions Ashtead in a backs to the wall batting display that demonstrated the spirit and character of the team.
Individual performances of note include:
- Harrison Green 92* in victory against Dorking
- Ed Cooper 74* & Stan Jones 3* from 40 deliveries to draw against Ashtead
- Simon Fuller 5-43 in the draw against Capel
- Chris Fewson 107* in the draw against Loxwood
- Joe Roberts 118* and Sam Partridge 3-22 in the victory over Loxwood
- Conor Foley 3-36 and Jordan Bond 96 in the victory over East Horsley
- Ollie Tebbitts 3-55 in the draw against Abinger
- Jordan Bond 4-20 in the victory over Hambledon
The 2018 season has set high expectations for next season and a firm base for the team to improve and kick on into 2019.

T20 XI
Captain - T20 XI
Chris Fewson
The season got off to a great start with Effingham winning the Mark Collin Memorial T20 competition which was held in May. A strong Effingham side were able to beat Epsom and Old Wimbledonians. More importantly, the day was a big success and it was nice to commemorate Mark and the great impact he had on all those involved.
Next came the Ockham T20 week in June which is always a great week. The ships got off to a shaky start after losing to Cobham Avorians in the first match. After a win in the second round, due to the opposition being unable to raise a team, Effingham found themselves in the final against Cobham – again. In a very close game, Effingham won by 4 runs and lifted the Ockham Cricket Week T20 trophy.
The biggest success in the 2018 T20 season was the run in the Surrey Slam. Effingham were able to beat Abinger, Horsley & Send, Worplesdon & Burpham, Oakwood, Slinfold and Dorking to reach the T20 Surrey regional finals day. With great turnout from the Effingham supporters, we were able to comfortably beat Valley End CC on what was a very damp wicket in the semi final. Unfortunately, Effingham came up short in the final against Spencer CC who were crowned the Surrey Slam T20 champions. It was a great achievement to reach the final of a competition featuring some cricket clubs significantly larger than ourselves. In summary, 2018 was an excellent season for The Ships and we are looking forward to trying to replicate some of our success in the upcoming season.
