U15 Season Report
We had a squad of 16 boys, most of which have been together now for over 6 years. The boys had a nets session each Wednesday evening (weather permitting) which was always well attended. Matches were played on Sunday mornings and midweek evenings. The season started on a chilly early May evening with a win over Ashtead, with the last wicket being taken from the last ball of the game, to give us a win by 1 run! Further very close matches were contested, a 2 run defeat vs Cobham, followed by a 1 wicket win at Cheam! All of the boys enjoyed a regular bowl, and the batting order was regularly rotated to ensure all boys got to bat.
Several of our boys played adult cricket, both Sat 2nd X1 and VCL league teams at the age of just 15, demonstrating the Club ethos of encouraging young players to develop their skills. The age group was split between U15 & U14’s, so next season half of the boys can continue to play junior cricket. This will require some new players to be added to the squad, and a new team manager as the sons of the 2016 coaches will have moved on from junior cricket.

U11 Season Report
We started the season brightly with a high scoring friendly against the Swiss national U11 side, losing on the last ball. There were some decent knocks from Thomas Stratten, Jake Raffaelli, Isaac Keay, Harry Amer, Raymond Wing and Sam Partridge. Confidence was still high in our opening cup match thereafter against Chobham, but unfortunately we could not surpass their under-par score of 98-6 with a string of unnecessary run outs, crumbling to 93 all out.
For the rest of May, we clicked into gear and pulled off an impressive win against East Molesey, who eventually finished 3rd in the league. Jake Raffaelli made a 30+ retirement after we had restricted East Molesey to 75-8, with Isaac Keay impressing with his leg spin and taking 2-11. We moved quickly on to Teddington, and although we only amassed 107-7, our bowling and fielding were outstanding, especially from Thomas Stratten taking 3-0, with the opposition skittled for 61.
Our next match against bottom of the table Epsom was probably the most disappointing. We didn’t bowl well and were punished with Epsom making 115-3. Although Jake weighed in with his usual brisk 30+ retirement, his team-mates just could not stay and we slipped to a poor 96-8, handing Epsom their only league win of the season.
Next up were Sunbury, who had a very impressive County player. He certainly helped account for our low score of 57 all out, and then came into bat after we had taken 3 confidence boosting wickets to run the show and show off before hitting the winning runs.
Our losing streak continued against Maori Oxshott, who made 107-6 against our indifferent bowling and fielding. Jake made another 30+ retirement and batted well with Isaac, and we were on for a close finish. However, wickets went down at alarming regularity and we succumbed to 84-9.
At this point in the season, the coaches (perplexed with the recent performance) decided to go back to basics and install the idea about doing the simple things on the pitch without trying to complicate matters in game winning strategies. What was important, was for the boys to be enjoying their cricket, and not to focus solely on winning. Clearly, this still needed work in our next game as our steady start batting first soon fell away, being bowled out for 76. Thames Ditton, were rarely troubled in reaching the target in 17 overs.
Our next league match was against Esher who had been the best team all season. Their 1st innings score of 153-4 was the highest against us ever, and in return their bowling revealed no weaknesses and we had no answer mustering 61 all out.
In our final league match we played Walton upon Thames. In the absence of Jake, Raymond Wing took centre stage taking 3-15 and then backing it up with an assured 29 not out. However, we could not chase down their score of 123-7 with 95-6 as our reply against their tight bowling.
With the league finished we played a return match against Epsom on a lovely sunning morning. It turned out to be a superb match with Epsom setting 114-6 after a good performance by us in the field. Harry Amer, Max Nowers, Isaac and Sam Partridge has all batted well to put us in a good position, but we just couldn’t finish it off and finished 2 runs short at 112-4.
A further friendly was played at Horsley & Send U10s. Horsley posted a commendable 119-4 with Joe Marvin accounting for 3 of the wickets. In return, our batting was solid and accomplished, with Finn Williamson, Jake, Lucas Townend and Harry all contributing towards the target in just 15 overs.
The season finale was the participation at an 8-a-side tournament at Horsley & Send together with Valley End, Ashtead and Farnham. After a steady start losing to the eventual winners, Farnham, the Effingham boys really worked well together in the field and pulled off impressive wins against the other sides. The last match against Horsley, was a close affair with them chasing our score of 80-2 off 10. Although they kept up with the run rate, our brilliant fielding and bowling prevailed and meant that we finished runners-up. There was not a single dropped catch from our side in the 4 games played.
We now look forward to an enjoyable and successful 2017 as U12s.
