EFFINGHAM CRICKET CLUB – SENIOR SELECTION POLICY
This document is primarily for the use of the Effingham Cricket Club Cricket Committee but shall be available to all members.
It is assumed that rules of the leagues within which the Club plays and the constitution of Effingham Cricket Club will be followed. Particularly, during the final four Saturday league games of the season, players who have appeared ten or more times in the 1st XI are not eligible for selection in the 2nd XI.
Effingham Cricket Club Selection Committee
There shall be a Selection Committee consisting of the Club Captain and team captains (1st XI, 2nd XI and Sunday XI, the T20 Captain shall be consulted for T20 fixtures). The Selection Committee shall be responsible for the selection of playing teams for Effingham Cricket Club and shall operate on the following basis:
Team Balance
The teams shall be selected primarily based on ability and shall aim to produce in each team a balance of specialist abilities (e.g batting, pace bowling, spin bowling, together with a requirement to select a wicket keeper for each side).
Promotion and Relegation of Players
Performance criteria may be applied to assist in making decisions as per the discretion of the Selection Committee. Factors to be considered shall include, but shall not be limited to, recent and past performances, attendance at Thursday evening practice and past and future availability.
Captains and Vice Captains will normally stay with their team.
Players relegated after a long period in a team will be contacted personally by the relegating Captain with an explanation.
Players must be aware that their selection for a particular team depends upon and is frequently governed by the availability of other players. For example, a player may appear to be ‘dropped’ after a good performance if a similar player previously from a higher team becomes available. Availability is not within the control of the Selection Committee and it can only work with what is available.
Return from Injury or Absence
Players returning from absence cannot assume that they will return to the team that they last played for.
End of Season Selection
Towards the end of the season, the possible achievements of the teams may become apparent. Within the rules and spirit of the league, team selection may alter when either side is pushing hard for promotion or trying to resist relegation.
Inclusivity
A senior member of the club (non-colt) who is available for both Saturday and Sunday in a given weekend is guaranteed to be selected for at least one fixture.
The bottom line is we all play cricket for fun and for Effingham Cricket Club; the Selection Committee must keep this central to all decisions.
