Thanks to Chris F for umpiring and Ollie Tebbitts for scoring.
Our first outing since August 2020 and big welcome to Niahm and Amelia (who nobly turned up despite a wrist injury) who join the team for the first time. Both teams managed a team of 10 with 20 overs each. Effingham won the toss and elected to field. Newdigate got off to some steady batting but Charlie came in at No. 9 to change it up significantly with a very impressive batting display of 30 including 2 6’s. Sophie, Erica and Emma taking a wicket each. Newdigate finished with a score of 383. Effingham’s top scorer was Erica with 21 runs with everyone working hard to chase down runs. Newdigate bowlers put up a good bowling show and claimed 7 wickets including 3 for Charlie. Effingham finished with a score of 328 so a win for Newdigate by 55 runs.
Sunday 27th June – Surrey Smash It Central Group – Walton-on-Thames Hosting
Festival Style pairs cricket. Teams of 8 and clubs play everyone in their group on 1 day. 16 over matches. Walton made a great weather call despite all the doom and gloom on the weather apps and we managed a dry afternoon until the last over.
Effingham Team: Erica, Emma, Beth, Sophie, Olivia, Georgie, Non and Niahm. A big welcome to Non and Niahm who join the team for the first time. A simplified scoring system, which included 2 points per run, and a run total per pair (smash) which is compared with the opposition pair to add additional points to the final score. This made for an interesting game and Pat managed to keep a handle on the scores for her scoring debut with some help from the Dads. Thanks to Lionel for umpiring all the matches.
Wimbledon – First match was against Wimbledon and we chose to bat first (giving Beth enough time to arrive!) Erica and Emma had a top smash score of 20, a team total of 239 points and the loss of 5 wickets. Wimbledon had a top smash of 25, a team total of 263 and also lost 5 wickets – 3 for Georgie and 1 each for Non and Sophie. Well done girls! With 4 points for a win, 1 point for a loss and a point for winning each of the smashes Wimbledon won by 7 points to 2.
Chertsey – 2nd up was Chertsey who only had 7 players so a player batted twice. Chertsey batted first with a top smash of 30, team total of 292 and no loss of wickets. Effingham had 2 joint top smashes of 24 with the girl’s pairings of Sophie & Olivia and Non & Georgie, a team total of 270 lost 2 wickets. Chertsey won by 6.5 point to 2.5 points as we tied for one of the smashes.
Walton – last up was Walton who batted first. Their top smash was 26, a team total of 283 with the loss of one wicket. Effingham had 2 joint top smashes of 22 from Georgie & Non and Erica and Emma, a team total of 268 and the loss of 2 wickets. Walton won by 7 points to 2.
Pyrford – we didn’t get to play Pyrford due to lack of time so each team ended up playing 3 matches each.
A very friendly opening set of games in the Surrey Smash It league and although we lost all of our games we were very much in touch with the standards of the other clubs.

They lost 3 wickets bowled by Niahm, Georgie and Alexie with a great catch by Hannah as wicketkeeper. Effingham’s top run scorer was Georgie with 15 and a total of 336 with the loss of 3 wickets. Effingham won by 34 runs.
Monday 19th July – Women and Gils Friendly match with fundraising BBQ
It was a hot July evening and with only 12 girls and 2 ladies we had to recruit some of the Dads to get the match off the ground. The Dads looked very fetching in pink and Sophie and Olivia nobly offered to play for the “other side”
The Girls batted first with a steady flow of runs and top scoring pair Georgie / Emily notching up an impressive 35 runs. They finished with a gross score of 89 runs and with the loss of 7 wickets a nett score of 48 runs. Good to see some of the Dads bowling against their daughters!
The Oldies (+ Sophie and Olivia!) then came into bat with some impressive pair scores of 27 for Diana / Doug, 23 each for Tim / Annabel and Emma / Tom. Top scoring pair were Gary and Chris with 45 runs including a 6 from Gary. They finished with a gross score of 127 and with the loss of 3 wickets a nett score of 112.
After much consideration, some penalties for the oldies (ill-fitting shirts, Gary’s too flamboyant 6, deductions for age and experience etc) the Girls were awarded the larger of the chocolate bar selection as prizes.
A very sociable BBQ followed with bar and BBQ takings of £241. Thanks to everyone who turned up to take part, the Dads for stepping in at short notice, Lionel for umpiring and scoring, Beth on the bar and Richard and Leanne on the BBQ.
Friday 30th July – Friendly Effingham v Capel Away
It was a blustery and showery day but thankfully the rain held off and we managed to squeeze the match in on the Astro Pitch. Effingham had only 7 players so Capel let us 3 fielders and we had some players bat twice. Thanks to Lionel for umpiring and Capel for scoring.
Effingham Team: Beth, Pat, Judith, Caroline, Georgie, Sophie and Olivia
A big welcome to Judith and Caroline who join the team for the first time. Pat also back after a couple of months off with a broken wrist.
Capel won the toss and asked Effingham to bat first. Top scoring pair were Beth and Georgie with 23 runs. We had a gross score of 96 runs but were rather expensive on wickets – 8 (sorry folks, I was the main culprit here!) Effingham finished with a net score of 56. Capel’s top scoring pair were Tara and and Issy with 23 runs, a gross score of 147 and with the loss of 6 wickets a nett score of 117.

Sunday 5th September – Surrey Smash It Central Group – Chertsey hosting
Effingham Team – Pat, Dominique, Erica, Emma and Non. 3 players loaned for fielding for each match. Effingham double batted on rotation. Thanks to Lionel for umpiring and scoring all the matches. Bizarre match format whereby the first innings of each match played on rotation and then completed later in the day. This added significantly to the days play resulting in Walton having to leave before the final innings.
Pyrford – Effingham batted first and after a slow start settled into some steady batting. Top scoring pair were Pat and Erica with 30 runs in both of their pairings.
