Jordan Bond leads the Effingham 1st XI to their third win of the season
It was mixed fortunes again for the Effingham Saturday XI’s as the 1st XI solidified their position in the mid-table of Division Four West, while the 2nd’s sank to the foot of their league.
First XI
The Effingham 1st XI welcomed an out-of-form Camberley 2nd XI to the G, whereupon losing the toss, they were asked to field.
Despite a swashbuckling start from the opposition’s opening pair, the ever wily Anthony Brown removed their top three batters before they could do too much damage on his way to an excellent 3-42.
Beyond this thanks to a controlled bowling performance that shipped only four extras and saw no one go at above 4.33 an over, Camberley never really looked like getting away from the hosts, as they ended up with a below par 199 all out.
Although the Effingham opening pair began the chase assuredly, there was still a lot to do with both back in the hutch with just 66 on the board.
With Jordan Bond and Harrison Green at the crease however, the 20 points never looked like they were going to head anywhere else as they put on 93 for the third wicket. Bond was the star of the show, continuing in his rich vein of form as he nearly took the Ships home with a match-winning 67.
That was no worry for the home side however, with Will Farnsworth (30*) taking the mantle on, securing the victory with six and giving Effingham a well-deserved five wicket win.
Second XI
The 2nd XI unfortunately continued their poor start to the season, losing to top of the table Weybridge 3rd XI to leave them winless in six.
Losing the toss again, Effingham were sent in to bat on a deck the home side were clearly familiar with, as inconsistent bounce and intelligent stump-to-stump bowling from the opposition meant they never really looked like posting a competitive total.
Again it was the ever-consistent Dom Carpenter leading the way with the bat, scoring a battling 37 off 97 balls with his only real support coming from Jack Jones (17).
Setting 114 was never likely to see the 2nd team claiming their first win of the season, and though an excellent performance from a chopped and changed bowling attack combined with a committed performance in the field kept them in the game for a while, Weybridge managed to crawl over the line with seven overs to go.
Particular highlights came from the bowling of James Blair and Will Darby, with the latter picking up his first wicket of the year courtesy of a one-handed, diving Mark Ransom catch. On to the next.
Effingham 1st XI 204-5 beat to Camberley 2nd XI 199 all out by 5 wickets
Effingham 2nd XI 114 all out lost to Weybridge 3rd XI 118-4 by 6 wickets
