Batting first on a pleasant summer evening, Effingham’s talented under 12’s got off to an unusual but important start with an opening stand of 33, Jake Rafaelli having scored all the runs before his enforced retirement. His brother, Josh then took over with another 30 runs, which brought about a second retirement. The home side bowled accurately and knocked the stumps over a few times, but Harry Amer became the third Effingham batsman to retire with 33. These excellent contributions enabled Effingham’s youngsters to finish with a very respectable total of 133 from their 20 overs.

In reply, Weybridge started well and at 111-5 they must have had their sights set on a victory. Their opening batsman had retired with 30 runs, but Sam Partridge, who had kept wicket for the first twelve overs, then swapped the gloves for the ball and gradually worked his way through the batting order. In only four overs, he returned the exceptional figures of 6-12 – four of the wickets being bowled and the other two caught – one off his own bowling! A quite outstanding performance, which obviously helped to restrict the home side to 122 all out, Effingham winning by 11 runs.
