Effingham 1st XI vs Ham & Petersham 1st XI
Saturday 11th April 2019
After heavy rain 24 hours earlier, there seemed little chance of this fixture going ahead, but the mopping up process enabled the match to start after a short delay and there was fine weather for the rest of the day.
Effingham made a steady start against the Ham & Petersham bowling attack however both openers fell with just 11 on the board. Ed Cooper and Chris Fewson moved the score on to 63 when Ed was bowled for 16. Joel Stroud wasted no time with a couple of boundaries before losing his off stump at a midway score of 76-5. His dismissal brought Dom Brown to the wicket and with Chris Fewson in full flow, they put on 54 runs in 8 overs, Dom leaving the crease with an excellent 23. Anthony Brown added a useful 9 and Alex Cooper finished with 8 not out at the close, but just before that, Chris Fewson had been bowled for an excellent 74, which gave Effingham a total of 160-8.
The visitors were immediately under pressure, losing their first wicket with only 8 on the board; this didn’t improve when Dom Brown hit top form and wickets started to fall in quick succession. At 31-5, then 31-6, Effingham were well on their way to a season boosting win. Ham & Petersham’s innings didn’t recover and they were all out for 69. Dom Brown finished with outstanding figures of 5-8 in 6.5 overs and he was well supported by Chris Fewson’s 3-13 in 7 overs. Some good catching also helped Effingham to a well-deserved 91 run victory.
