Burlison’s ships sunk by Claygate
Claygate 1st XI v Effingham 1st XI
Fuller’s Brewery Surrey County League – 2nd Division
On winning the toss, Effingham’s captain, Adam Burlison, decided to bat first to try and avoid the promised rain later. A strange malaise seemed to overcome some of Effingham’s batsmen, as few of them played as they normally would.
The accurate Claygate bowling also played a part in Effingham’s low score, with De Silva returning inspiring figures of 4 wickets for no runs in 2.2 overs. The six other wickets were shared between Rodrigo with 3-18 and Howe 3-35. The away team’s innings closed on 123 all out, but at 117-4, a much higher total would have been anticipated. Nick Procter was top scorer for Effingham with 42, supported by Mark Collin (28) and Jake White with 26.
Claygate were under very little pressure regarding the total they needed to win, although the Effingham bowlers tried hard to keep the game under control. The home side achieved the required number of runs, losing only four wickets in the process. Machin top scored with 43 not out, while Wijetunga got 24 and De Silva 29.
For Effingham, Nick Procter finished with 3-22 and Matt Dixon took 1-8, with 3 maidens in his 5 overs.
