Mark Collin
1976 – 2017
A much-loved friend, teammate and club member who passed away on the 19th of August 2017.
Forever in our hearts.

“Our Club has lost a truly great man, we have all lost a truly great friend. He owned the finest and hardest square cut you will ever see, that shot made my Saturday each week. We spoke only last week about our “project” of getting the team from Fullers Div 3 to The Championship, he was committed to everything Effingham, he had unfinished business. I can’t thank him enough for providing me with the alternative option on the pitch, the sensible guiding option. He was brilliant with all the young talent we have, gently nurturing, guiding and advising them whether it was with bat or ball, he wanted us to grow as a club. Mark was a proper cricket traditionalist, play hard, play fair but play straight lads (we always failed with that part) and drink beer in the bar afterwards! My deepest sympathies and condolences go to Dawn, Sophie, George, Bob, Rose, Andrew and Hannah in these sad times, we are here for you at any time. Mark you will be forever missed.”
Adam Burlison, ECC 1st XI Captain and, more importantly, friend.
“Words cannot describe the type of man Mark was, as a person, role model and team mate. He had the rare ability to put a smile on your face and calm you down in the toughest of sporting situations, he has helped me not only on the cricket pitch, but also outside as well and his example is one that I hope to follow in the way the club and myself play the game of cricket, but more importantly, take the values that he has taught me into my professional and personal life. I am so proud to have spent time with him in the dressing room and out on the field and to have called Mark my friend. RIP my mentor x”
Jake White, ECC 1st XI Vice Captain
“I’ve been lucky enough to know Mark since he joined our little club. What a lovely unassuming caring man. Always with a smile on his face he was there with words of advice and encouragement for the younger guys coming through and a constant source of knowledge and reliability for the team itself. A great cricketer and a great man. No one would ever have a bad word to say about him and as I look through all the comments and kind words it’s clear that throughout his life he had made great friendships from all different spheres. A family man, I often saw him walking down to school in the morning doing the drop off – he knew the importance of that life /work balance as well as his cricket. He will be sorely missed by all those who knew him and his passing has left a big hole for us all. RIP mate – it really was a pleasure.”
Mike Fenwick, ECC
“I first met Mark seven years ago when playing for Effingham vs Bookham, I vividly remember opening the batting against him. At that time it was by far the best bowling I had ever faced. I remember surviving for a few overs before he inevitably got me out. But of far greater importance is my memory of after that game, when in the bar he congratulated me on how I had played with that big grin on his face. And that is to a great extent how I will remember him. To all young players at Effingham, who had the opportunity to play and train with Mark, he was simply the best mentor and role model anyone could ask for. That conversation with Mark after the Bookham game gave me so much confidence in my cricket in the years that followed. I will forever cherish the memories I have of doing laps of the ground after we had both been dismissed. Our conversations in those times varied from discussing the state of the game and how we could both improve as players, to life advice and careers guidance, to discussions about the project. Mark was immensely passionate about the project; promoting Effingham from Surrey County League Division Three to the Surrey Championship. Mark’s contribution to this endeavour, my life and the lives of many others cannot be overstated. Ultimately, I could not be any prouder to call Mark my friend and feel privileged to have spent the time I did with him. All of my thoughts are with Mark’s wife, children, family, friends and teammates. He will never be forgotten. RIP Marky.”
Edward Cooper, ECC 1st XI
“Mark was a true Gentleman who will surely be missed by all who knew him. At cricket, he balanced a relaxed sense of humour with a determination to win and he was an example to younger players who were lucky enough to play along side him. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.”
Warren and Ollie Tebbitts
“When I answered a request on the SURREY ECB ACO website for an umpire to stand in a game for Effingham CC 3 years ago, I did not realise that this would be the start of a friendship which would mean so much to me. I met a young team who wanted to move up in standard and play in higher division cricket. I also met a man who welcomed me warmly and enthusiastically. As you can guess, that man was Mark. I soon realised that he was genuine, honest, and cared deeply in nurturing the younger players around him. With the other senior players, he mentored and supported these players and helped them to gain promotion 2 years running and consolidate their position in their current league. I knew how much they loved him and you only have to look at all of the other messages posted here to see what a positive influence he has, both on and off the field. I will miss him personally, and I can see that a massive part of the cricket community feels the same way.”
Kevin Trimming, ECC 1st XI Umpire
“We have lost a true friend and cricketer, I think many of us are still so shocked at Mark’s sudden departure that it will take time to sink in. Mark was a friendly soul, great all round cricketer and teammate. Unfortunately I only had the privilege to play a handful of games with Mark and it was always apparent from the outset that he brought a calmness to any batting lineup. He really had a love for his game. I saw Mark more off the field, either bumping into him at school runs in the morning or lunch breaks in town. I will miss his friendly grin as we line each other up on approach, Mark always had time to chat, we spoke about things that matter to us and we always ended our chats talking about cricket. My deepest condolences to Mark’s family. You will be sorely missed mate. Rest in peace.”
Nic Vos, ECC T20 XI
“The first winter nets,
The outdoor practises in 4 degrees,
The moment he pokes his head round the changing room door,
The ‘Alright mate, how you doing?’.
The fielding drills and catching skiers,
The pre-match team talks,
The light hearted jokes that finish on a high,
The way he puts everyone at ease.
The walk to the middle with that cheeky chappie smile shining,
The steely eyed focus on the task when he’s there,
The in-between overs moments, The trying to make him laugh,
The way he makes you relaxed and positive just by being him.
The stood at mid-off,
The celebrations, The handshakes,
The one more beer and talk about…
The see you next week mate.
I have only good memories Marky, rest well.”
Josh Farrell, ECC 1st XI, 2nd XI, VCL XI, Sunday XI,
Fixtures Secretary, Ground maintenance team
“The thing I will miss most is turning up to a match on a Saturday and not seeing his beaming smile and welcoming nature. He continued this attitude onto the field, always showing impeccable sportsmanship and leadership, and had the quality to match it. Always being a reliable player with the bat and, when called upon, the ball. Mark constantly was there for me as a mentor on and off the field, I will never forget the help and encouragement he gave me during my lows on the pitch and seeing his jubilation when I was at my peak. The way friends, family, Effingham CC and the cricket community in Surrey have responded is testament to the man Mark was and the footprint he has left in many lives. My thoughts are with his family and especially his children whom do not deserve this obstacle at such a young age. I will miss you my friend and will continue to follow your words of wisdom every time I step onto the pitch. An unfair dismissal given far too early in life.”
Dominic Brown, ECC 1st XI
“I first met Mark whilst playing for Bookham CC. Here was a man who knew his game, and was clearly too good to be playing for Bookham CC.Soon enough, I learned that Adam had recruited Mark to play for Effingham 1st XI, and in Mark, Adam had found a willing partner to embark on the project of taking Effingham into the Surrey Championship. Sadly, with Mark’s untimely passing, that remains unfinished business. I will always remember Mark for a particular century he scored whilst playing for Bookham, before retiring so that the youngsters could also have their turn; but also the “chats” we used to have on the train coming back from London, discussing the ways we could introduce the younger talent that existed within the club, into the adult teams. I found it difficult to sleep on Saturday night, as I kept wondering how Mark’s family must be feeling; Mark went to play cricket just as so may of us do each Saturday, who could have foreseen that he would not come return home.My most sincere condolences go to Mark’s wife, two young children, his parents and wider family.”
Asim Iqbal, ECC 2nd XI Captain
“On Saturday the world lost a remarkable man. Mark was an absolute role model to all at the club and went about his cricket in exactly the right way. He was incredibly kind and always had time for anyone. I will greatly miss going out to bat with Mark and joking about how we were not a lot for several wickets again! His calmness and ability to make you smile no matter the situation was priceless. I have very fond memories of fielding next to Mark (the point specialist!) and always enjoyed chatting between deliveries. It was an absolute pleasure to share the same dressing room as him and we all thoroughly enjoyed spending our weekends in his company. Mark was more than just a great cricketer and will be truly missed by his family and friends. Our thoughts and love go out to them during this awful time. Sleep tight Marky x”
Chris Fewson, ECC 1st XI
“The words are not available to describe not only this cruel, devastating tragedy but also the man himself. I only played cricket with Mark a handful of times but watched him from the boundary on many occasions. He was a bear of a man, competitive, friendly and very fair. Yes, he could cut the leather off a cricket ball and was a fine fielder in that gully position but above all he was cheerful and affable – well liked by teammates and opposition alike. I often ‘chewed the cud‘ with him over a post match beverage and listened to his insightful thoughts on the game we both loved. He was hugely supportive of my youngest son, Harry, whenever they played cricket together and that is how I will choose to remember him – generous in deed, kind and caring, wise and, above all, a bloody good bloke ! He will be sorely missed by all. RIP Buddy.”
Andy Mead, Trustee, former Chairman ECC
“As so many before me have said, the club has not just lost a great cricketer but a great friend. From the day that Mark joined the club his smile was ever present in the dressing room and his attitude towards the game set an example for everyone, especially the colts coming into the 1st team. I was shocked and saddened to hear the news and the plans we have to pay tribute to Mark are a reflection of how much he meant to people at this club and beyond, I can say with certainty that he, and his famous square cut, will be in our thoughts for a long time and he will always be our number four. ”
Nick Bond, ECC 2nd XI
“The reaction of the club and the wider world to Mark’s passing speaks volumes as to the man he was; a real good guy in the world. My most abiding memory of Mark will be the joy he took from other people’s successes – his willingness to pass on his knowledge and experience, to younger players especially, is rare and invaluable. I would like to think that Mark not only helped me to grow as a cricketer, but more importantly as a person. His attitudes towards sport, and life in general, was always an example to anyone that knew him. Effingham Cricket Club will never be the same without Mark, but we can safely say that the club, and everyone who met him, will always have Mark in our hearts. ”
Cameron Walters, ECC 1st XI
Mark was a rare man, always made you smile, made you think and made you welcome. There are far too many positive virtues to list that Mark personified every day. For me he showed everyone how to be a sportsman, a gentleman and a family man. There are some people who’s impact on your life transcends the barriers imposed by time and space. Wherever I go I know that lessons I have learnt from Mark will guide me and his presence will always be felt at the Club. My thoughts and love are with his family, R.I.P Mark.
Ben Shaw, former ECC 1st XI & former Chairman
“To me, it’s incredibly difficult to find people you ‘click’ with immediately, but Mark was that person. Being a new member of Effingham CC this year, Mark’s friendly nature and infectious passion for the club helped me settle almost immediately. Mark always played the game with nothing but a 100% and was the perfect team mate to have around you, even during the tough times. The first to pick you up when you were at rock bottom, he was a shining example for all of us, especially those of us at the beginning of our adult lives; he demonstrated to us how to be a true gentlemen and the perfect Club cricketer. Sadly our time with Mark has been tragically cut short, but I think we can all take strength and courage from everything that Mark taught us and from his encouragement to always better ourselves. Entirely selfless, always jovial, Mark’s huge presence will be greatly missed, and for those that were privileged to know and play with Mark, I am sure he will always be our Number 4. All my love goes to Mark’s wife and children, his friends and family in this tough time, and I hope they too can take strength and courage from the knowledge that Mark was so close to everyone’s hearts. Rest in Peace Marko, keep cutting…”
Charlie Forbes, ECC 1st XI
“When I look at this webpage and see the image of my friend, Mark, looking back at me I am filled with the wish to both smile and weep. That face to me has always meant a huge smile a chirpy “hello mate” and so we would begin to share an update of our lives. I could talk about Mark’s love of cricket, his cut shot and the power with which he could hit the ball but for me, I will always remember and love Mark for the times off the field. Those spent in the pub, hanging out with our families together over pizza (thanks Adam and Jo) and those spent walking the field after being out for a duck (again!). Mark was an amazing player but an outstanding sportsman who was 100% in the game but had an ability to remain calm, encourage others and always exude positivity. I and many others have really lost a true friend and all our thoughts and prayers are with Dawn and the children.”
Nick Procter and family, ECC 1st XI
“I first encountered Mark 7 years ago when he bowled a snorter of a ball to me when I was a colt, in a local derby and he was playing for Bookham. (Although my choice of shot was probably questionable!) The next time I saw him, he had switched allegiance to the mighty Ships, he no longer bowled and instead was the purveyor of a fine cut, a charming smile and a calm and approachable demeanour. Last Saturday was my first game playing alongside him in a while and I had just handed over the umpire clicker to him and said ’That’s the over mate’ as I ran off to pad up during a famous Effingham middle order procession of wickets. Little did I know, it would be the last time we’d speak. Words can’t really explain how you process moments like these, and still as I write this, so soon after, I find it incredibly hard to believe. He was a great cricketer, clearly a wonderfully devoted family man and someone the club valued extremely highly. My only regret is that we haven’t played together more, as I know I would have benefited in every way. My thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his wife, children and family at this difficult time. Rest well Mark x”
Duncan Mitchell, ECC 2nd XI, Sunday XI
“Mark was a rare breed of person. His ability to stay calm even when the rest of us were losing our heads (and it happens a lot) was incredible. His sense of humour and infectious laugh made my Saturday, along with his infamous cut shot! The fact that Saturdays will no longer start with a bear hug and a ‘hello mate!’ is something I will miss terribly, alongside his amazing stops at point. His devotion and love to his family is unparalleled and my thoughts and love go out to them. Rest in peace Ginger Merlin, you will be missed.”
Josh White, ECC 1st XI
“My memory of Mark will always be of someone always encouraging, always positive, constantly looking to quietly support his team mates. He had a fantastic way of making everyone he talked to feel special, and I think what he really showed us was how to play competitively and with respect for the opposition, but also how to play for each other. A few words about THAT shot though…I remember fielding at Gully against Ripley and I turned to him at Point, after he got another big paw on the ball, and jokingly asked him if it pained him each time he had to field there. He laughingly replied, ‘Yeah, it is pretty ironic that I spend all day trying to cut the ball through here and then all afternoon trying to stop others doing the same.’ He won that battle in the end though. He got one last fantastic cut away against Newdigate and whilst I was umpiring at square leg, I heard the South African bloke next to me say. ‘That’s a great shot though eh.’ …RIP mate.”
Matthew Dixon, ECC 1st XI
“Mark will be missed for much more than being a key cricketer in our team. Above all else, he was a calm, reassuring and kind-hearted influence from the boundary, a great friend and mentor, who I am proud to have known and had the opportunity to have played with. I am unable to describe how much his contribution on and off the pitch will be sorely missed and never forgotten by myself and many others. ”
Harrison Green, ECC 1st XI
“When I arrived at the club Mark was one of the first to welcome me and he did all he could to make sure I felt part of the team. Despite only playing with him for a short time he taught me a great deal about the game and he showed me the spirit in which it should be played. I could always rely on Mark to bring a smile to my face. My thoughts are with his family at this time. He was a great cricketer, a great teammate and, more importantly, a great man. He will be missed. Thank you Mark.”
Caleb Whitefoord, ECC 1st XI
“Mark was a great mentor for me and many of the upcoming colts within the club. His calm but serious approach towards cricket set an example for the way in which we wanted to play and was pivotal for the rise of the 1st XI. The ‘master of the cut’ will be missed very much by everyone who knew him within the club; he will never be forgotten. #alwaysournumber4”
Jordan Bond, ECC 1st XI
“I only met Mark this year, but no one made me feel more welcome at the club than him. Such a wonderfully warm and friendly guy, he played hard and laughed harder. He was always there for his team mates, comforting and encouraging everyone. We are all so lucky to have played with him. He was a model cricketer and a truly lovely man. The club has lost a legend. My thoughts are with his family at this tragic time. Thank you Mark. RIP. ”
Chris Adlam, ECC 1st XI
“Really sad and shocking news, who knows what to say when someone dies but I am really sorry for the loss for Mark’s family . I will always remember him as a very loving and respected person, my thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. May God rest him in peace.”
Tahir Latif, ECC 1st XI
“I felt sad to hear the news about this incident, I’m so sorry may his soul rest in peace…”
M F Butt, ECC 1st XI
“Both on and off the field, Mark was a great example to everyone in the club. He represented us with skill, dignity, passion and respect. His cheerful smile and welcoming nature were never too far away, whatever the situation. We have lost a true gentleman and a friend far too early and we are poorer without him. The thoughts and best wishes from my family go to Mark’s family for now and the future. I hope you can take some strength from the high esteem and depth of feeling that we have for Mark. #alwaysournumber4”
Martin Keay, ECC 2nd XI, Junior Cricket Director
“Everyone’s memories of you seem to be the same as mine…kind, generous, funny, willing to listen, willing to teach and imbue wisdom if asked. As with everyone else my first time really meeting you was on the pitch. Having taken up one of Adam’s usual last minute offer/requests to play for Bookham to make numbers up against ECC in a Sunday “friendly” you and I stood next to each other for ages with me keeping and you stood next to me at slip. From the moment we started talking you made me feel like I had known you for years not just minutes. That initial introduction to you set the tone for the all too brief friendship we shared. From the always familiar “how did you get on today?”, usually followed by “what can you do to improve that?”, when you returned from a 1st XI game to the few net sessions we shared where you would me feel like I was the only thing that existed when you were feeding the bowling machine. The reason I mention the examples I do is that you made everyone feel special. I never heard a cross word from you. Even when you heard I was leaving last winter your first conversation was to say good luck and then to put me in contact with friends you knew till you realised I wasn’t going to your old club but “their biggest enemy down the road” when the conversation turned to me clearly making massive mistakes and did I know what I was doing. I can’t begin to understand what Dawn and your children are going through but only to say you will never be forgotten and the club and its members will always be there for your family. Rest well xx”
Gareth Amer, Former ECC Player and Club Secretary
“A great man and a shining example to all young cricketers of how to play the game in its true spirit. We will miss Mark badly.”
Ross Risby, ECC Secretary
“I wish I was emailing you in better times. Shocked and saddened to hear of Mark’s passing over the weekend. He was the embodiment of Effingham’s values as a club, and he will be remembered by all. My condolences to his family, and the ECC community. He will be missed.”
Matt Meers, ECC (Australia Branch)
“Mark was never going to be bad enough at cricket to play with me in the 2nd team or on a Sunday but I had the privilege to umpire him several times and, more often, chat with him in the bar after games. He always impressed me with his kindness, his good humour and his wisdom not just about cricket but life in general. I knew Mark as a cricketer but I know he was also a husband, a father and more. My thoughts are with his family; you can be very proud of him, how many lives he touched and the influence he had on our club. I truly hope these thoughts give you some solace.”
Simon Fuller, ECC 2nd XI
“Mark was a true gentleman in the broadest sense. He was a fantastic mentor to, and supporter of, younger players coming through the club and a genuinely decent, friendly guy. I know my two boys will miss him, the club will miss him, village cricket will be the poorer for his absence and his family has lost a lovely son, husband and father. A charming man, taken too soon. RIP Mark, #alwaysournumber4 ”
Fran Bond, ECC Membership Secretary
“I heard a couple of hours ago about the tragic death on Saturday of one of the Effingham players – Mark Collin. I’d just like to add my condolences, to the no doubt many others flowing in, to Mark’s family and everyone at the club.”
Peter Kent, former ECC player
“I hope that reading all the tributes to Mark will provide some comfort to his family, knowing how much he meant to so many people. As a club, we will be available to help you through this for as long as you may need us. Mark was a true gentleman, who I have watched week after week making his dedicated and conscientious contribution to Effingham’s 1st XI’s recent success. It is hard to take in what has happened and that Mark will not be around to offer his calm and sensible approach to the game he loved so much. I was fortunate to have kept wicket to his accurate fast bowling during his brief time with Bookham Cricket Club, before he joined Effingham, but references to his powerful square cut remind us of his all round cricket ability. There is no doubt that he will be sadly missed, both on and off the field and we will all look back on time spent with him as a bonus. RIP Mark.”
Ray Pritchard, President ECC
“Mark always impressed me, not only by his passion for our great game, but how he was able to put this across in a calm and encouraging way to those around him, particularly his younger teammates. A true Gentleman, and one who has left a lasting legacy in the hearts and minds of Effingham cricketers young and old. RIP Mark.”
Paul Stroud, Chairman ECC
“I really liked Mark from the first moment I met him and am hugely shocked by his passing. Mark was a fantastic guy to have around, always cheerful and one of those people that everyone was pleased to see. It’s unthinkable that Mark won’t be a part of our future, but I’m so glad to have had the opportunity to know him. Mark loved his cricket, he loved to compete and most of all he loved a cut. I’m sure many of us will long remember the glorious sight of Mark in full flow, scoring freely square of the wicket. Mark will be missed a great deal. It’s a huge loss for everyone and I’m just so incredibly sorry for his family. I hope they can find comfort in some way from all these good things that so many people have to say about a wonderful guy.”

Paulo Gomes da Silva, friend
Like everyone else posting on this condolence page, I am deeply saddened to hear about Mark’s passing. It is clear that he was someone who everyone adored and thought fondly of. I knew Mark since I was around 6 years old, so over 30 years ago. His family and mine used to do a school run together. He was always a funny (and cheeky) and caring person, be it during the school run or in his after school activities with the Kennedy Club. Although I didn’t get to see much of Mark, these last few years, whenever I did he was always had time for a catch up, be it asking after my family and me or chatting about sport. He was a true sportsman on the pitch, competitive but respectful, someone you could trust to go to for that special delivery in cricket, or a big kick during a rugby match! His loss is truly a case of a person going before their time! Mine and my family’s thoughts and prayers go out to Mark’s wife Dawn and children, as well as Rosemary, Bob, Andy and Hannah – who have lost a husband, father, son and brother. RIP Mark.
Simon Whittall, family friend
The Whittalls are devastated to hear of Marks far too early death. A vibrant personality with a zest for life and a great personality- he will be missed by all who came into contact with him. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Dawn and his young family together with Bob, Rosemary, Hannah and Andrew. A sad sad loss.
Stewart Anderson, Industry Friend and Colleague
I only knew Mark for a few years and every time we met he was such an honest and genuine person, someone you warmed to very quickly. He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends. Rest in peace Mark.
Wandgas CC
We were shocked and saddened to hear of Mark’s sudden collapse and offer sincere but all too inadequate sympathy to his family and friends. From all at Wandgas CC.
Ricardo Gomes da Silva, friend
I am deeply saddened and shocked by Mark’s passing. My thoughts, love and prayers are with Rosemary and Bob, Hannah and Andy, and Dawn, Sophie and George at this incredibly difficult time. It was an honour and privilege to have counted Mark as a dear friend, I have very many happy memories of our friendship, ever since we started the school run together at Woburn Hill, memories that I shall cherish for ever. Oscar Wilde wrote “To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.” and it is clear from the way that Mark was loved and adored by his family and friends from all walks of his life; the high esteem he was held in by both colleagues and sporting teammates alike; his entrepreneurial spirit and competitiveness; his fabulously good nature, banter and loyalty that Mark was one of those very rare people, who was taken away too soon from us. I shall miss him and there will be a considerable empty space, without your loud laugh, at our usual booth at the Archduke… RIP Mark
Will Moore, teammate and friend.
Such a tragic shocking loss. Sponge was a top man, a solid bloke and such a genuine character. I first met him when I joined OW’s cricket club and was proud to call him a teammate for the next decade with OW’s and Epsom CC. Whenever a week or three had passed with no contact it was sponge who picked up the phone for a catch-up. On one such occasion we played tennis…mistake as he could properly play. Sponge then subtly brought a game of squash to the table…35 mins later I gave up 9-0 down and he wasn’t even sweating! Aside from his amazing sporting prowess, he was a brilliant friend. It was after one such thrashing that he asked me to be godfather to his daughter, I think out of sympathy! The last time we were all together was riding the roller-coasters at Chessington…me screaming like a child and the big man and his family laughing at me! Sponge will be sorely missed but never forgotten.
David Axten, friend
I’ve known Mark since we met at school almost 30 years ago. We grew up together, ran the school charity together, when mark and dawn came to London after uni we all lived together. A few years later I was his best man and five years ago he returned the favour, we are godfathers to each other’s sons. There are very few important events in my life which haven’t included Mark. The words don’t exist to express my thoughts at the moment but he was a friend, confidante and source of enormous fun and laughter. I will miss him always. All my love to Dawn the children and Mark’s parents and siblings.
Teck and Joyce Kiang, family friends
As close friends of Rosemary and Bob we are shocked and saddened to hear of Mark’s untimely death. Our sincere condolences goes out to the whole family.
Guy Goodhart, friend
Mark was born three days after me. I don’t remember the very early days when apparently we shared birthday parties (tight mums splitting the cost!) but I do remember playing in the garden or park with him; never ‘army’ but always sport, though not cricket, we didn’t have enough friends – his fault as he was the one with ginger hair! As we grew older we went our separate ways due to schools, where we lived etc but our mums remain friends so all through my adult life I have got the news updates, weddings, kids etc, which was nice. On reading the other condolences it’s obvious that Mark grew up to be a very popular and respected man, one that I wish I had known as an adult. I was saddened to hear the dreadful news and my thoughts are with his family.
David and Islay Auty, friend’s of Mark’s parents
We would like to express our most sincere condolences to Mark’s family and friends. His loss will be felt by so many whose lives he enriched and his loss to his immediate family, to whom he was devoted, will be immeasurable. Our hearts go out to them and our thoughts and prayers are for them at this tragic time.
Lance and June Garett, Family friends
June and I were devastated to hear of Mark’s death. He belonged to a very close family and shared with them their strong family beliefs , particularly related to sport. His death is not only a tragedy for his family but will be felt across a wide circle of business and cricket colleagues.
David Stewart, President Surrey County Cricket Club
The Club were pleased to be able to remember Mark at last night’s T20 Quarter Final Match at the Oval. I had never met him but it was very apparent from Ray Pritchard, the President of Effingham CC and 50 other representatives of the Club who were in the ground that he was hugely popular member and will be really missed. Our condolences to Dawn and their children, George and Sophie.
Bill Turner, Newdigate Wicketkeeper on August 19th.
My heartfelt sympathy for Mark’s family and for you all at Effingham CC, his wider ‘cricket’ family. I hope in time you will enjoy your cricket again with fond memories of Mark.
Effingham Village Recreation Trust
The Trustees of Effingham Village Recreation Trust are deeply saddened by this great loss to Mark’s family, to Effingham and to the Cricket Club. We extend our deepest sympathy to the Club and to all his family and colleagues.
Chipstead Coulsdon and Old Walcountians Cricket Club
Please send sincere condolences to Effingham Cricket Club and to all Mark’s family.
Andrew Benzeval, Chairman, BICC
I was very sorry to hear this news. On behalf of Battersea Ironsides, may I extend our condolences to Effingham and to Mark Collin’s family. Our XIs are primed for tributes prior to Saturday’s games.
Richard Curtis, former Old Wimbledonians teammate
I was shocked to hear the news that Mark had passed away playing cricket last weekend and my immediate thoughts were for Mark’s family. As a teammate at Old Wimbledonians for many years I remember him as a fast and accurate bowler, and when not taking wickets he didn’t give runs away. He had a very safe pair of hands and a bullet arm in the field but he was a more than handy bat too. Hard hitting and fast scoring down the order. Spongey was a captain’s dream. I enjoyed facing him in the nets because somehow you felt that he was trying to help you improve by giving you good practise and not wasting deliveries. Interclub matches were an altogether different prospect. On several occasions I was cut in half by balls that would leave you wondering how you’d survived only to be cleaned up later in the over. Better to be in his team. A fantastic competitor and great bloke, taken too soon but never forgotten. RIP Spongey.
Val Goodhart-Riley
I first met Mark in Kingston Hospital where he was born three days after my son. Mark’s mother Rosemary and I have been close friends ever since. I look back to the early years when the boys were babies and young children with great affection. Mark showed signs of his future sporting life even in those days. I am very sad.
Robert Charles, Chairman Guildford CC
Please accept Guildford Cricket Club’s condolences at the very sad death of Mark Collin. Our sincerest wishes to his family and friends at such a tragic time.
Nicky, Local Shop Owner
I was devastated to hear of the passing of Mark Collin. Mark was a customer of my shop ‘Run to Live’ in Ashtead and lately Leatherhead. He brightened up my day when he walked in with his friendly smile and gregarious attitude to life and he will be missed. Please pass on condolences from myself and my staff to his family. We are truly sorry for his loss.
Matt Hope, university friend
Mark was a lovely man and good friend while I was at Uni. It is terrible to hear of his passing away. We had some good times playing snooker, cricket and partying and I will miss him.
He was a popular and much liked man and my thoughts are with Dawn, his children and family.
Tim & Carol Richards – family friends
We have known Mark as a bright and cheerful child and energetic young boy. Shocked and appalled at this loss. So unfair. This condolence book is a great tribute to a fine young man.
Dan Morgan, university friend
Mark was one of the first people I met at university and his irrepressible personality (not to mention the tremendous tall stories he used to tell) left a lasting impression on me. In fact, I shall always be envious of his tireless attitude and energy. We shared several pretty ropey dwellings in Preston over the university years but, as is often the case when people are thrown together, eventually lost touch. I did hear from him time to time and am not surprised to hear he was incredibly well liked and respected. As Dave Clarke said: he was just that kind of guy. Mark, you will always be in my thoughts.
Reubin Iqbal, Captain, Bookham CC.
I was extremely saddened to learn about Mark. I can’t say that I knew Mark very well; we shared a cricket pitch on a few occasions, which provided an insight into Marks character; a gifted cricketer who could decimate a bowling attack at will and a gentlemen to boot. It was privilege to be in his company. My father always tells me that the All Mighty takes the best souls early, for he only knows why. Our thoughts are with his family.
Dr David McArdlem Senior Lecturer in Law, University of Stirling
I just wanted to send my sympathies over Mark’s decease. I’ve never played at Effingham and never met Mark, but I do know that life comes at you fast, and often traps you plumb in front when you least expect it. We must all play hard and play well as much as we can, because we’re a long time retired.
Jonny Stephens, school friend
I had known Mark for the past 35 years, having gone to school with him all through Woburn Hill and St Georges College and then played against him while I played at Walton and he played for OW’s or Epsom. Mark was an excellent sportsman whilst at school and whether it was on Rugby pitch, Hockey pitch, Cricket field or even just playing football on the playground Mark gave it all and not only with rather red cheeks but with a massive smile on his face. We played cricket together in our age group sides all the way through to 1st XI and at that time he was more of a bowler but could still hit a heavy ball over the sightscreen!. He would come charging in for as long as you could ask him, giving every ball 100% effort. Even if without success he would keep smiling and just get redder and redder. TBR (Trusty but rusty) as he was called never let us down. In more recent years it was always nice to play league cricket against him apart from when he got me out! I, like you all, could not believe what I was reading on Sunday morning. Sadly there is no justice in this world and he has gone far far too soon. It has been great to read so many tributes to him all saying what a great chap he was because it is true. My thoughts and prayers to all of the Collin family and the Old Georgian family has lost a valued member. RIP Rusty you will never be forgotten.
Geno Malone, Bookham CC
Will miss you Mark, dear friend, from when you first played for Bookham and then on to Effingham. God bless.
David Clarke, friend from University Central Lancashire
It is with great sadness that I read the tragic news about Mark. I lived with Mark whilst at the University of Central Lancashire. Although we rather lost touch over the years, I remember very him well and enjoyed seeing snapshots of his lovely family as they flashed across my facebook page. He was a kind, warm, generous and genuine guy. We spent many hours putting the world to rights over a snooker table when we should probably have been studying and, very occasionally, he would let me beat him just so I would come back next time! Whilst others were busy earning a few quid working behind bars, Mark could be found working with the elderly in the local care home. An unusual job for a student – but that was the kind of chap he was. He enjoyed helping people. He also enjoyed competition and would turn almost anything into a game, where he would more often than not emerge as victor, but always with good grace and humour. It is no surprise to read that he was known at his club for nurturing young talent and for his calm, mature approach to the game he loved the most. We have lost one of life’s rare gents. My love and thoughts go out to Dawn and his children. Rest In Peace old friend.
Bob Satchell – Chairman Bookham CC
This is really very sad news and although I did not play very often with Mark, the few games we enjoyed together at Bookham and at Effingham were always enjoyable and I regarded him as a true sportsman. Not only that he was a very nice person. I have fond memories of the innings he played at Bookham CC against Horley many years ago when he scored a very rapid 100 with sixes raining over the pavilion and he then retired to give the youngsters a go. Mark was a gentlemen and will be truly missed by all in the local cricket community, and of course friends and family.
Howard PE Dept @Howardsport
Thoughts to all the club members and the family affected by the tragic events at the weekend @EffinghamCC from @Howardsport
From Gordon Griscti, former teammate at OWCC
This is devastating news and and my thoughts are with his family. I played with Mark at OWCC for a number of years and I will always remember Mark for his abundance of talent on the field and the way he played the game, with a great big smile! He was a true gent who loved a beer and a laugh afterwards. He was loved by everyone who knew him. One of life’s good guys! So sad. RIP Mark/Spongey.
Jonny Stephens, school friend
Mark was a school friend of mine and we played together all through school and when against each other at club level. He loved his cricket and always gave it his all. He will be missed by all. RIP Rusty.
Nick Hoyle, Old Georgian (’94)
Reading all these amazing tributes, it is clear that after our time together at St George’s College, Mark went on to become such an amazing man, talented cricketer and I’m sure a wonderful husband and father – as we expected he would. It is incredibly sad that his life has been cut so short and it is impossible to make sense why such a fine man has been taken from us so early. However I hope his family can draw some strength from the fact he was loved and respected by so many. At such a terrible time it is good to see the cricket community supporting one another and I hope it will continue to support Mark’s family in the tough times ahead. With much love and prayers to Mark’s family.
Duncan Jenkinson, Regional Clubs & Facilities Manager,
England and Wales Cricket Board, Lords Cricket Ground
I’m extremely sorry to hear the tragic news regarding Mark Collin and would like to pass on my deepest sympathies.
Mark Wilcox, friend and colleague
I first met Spongey when we worked together at One Stop back in 1999. He was a fabulous guy to be around both in and outside of work. We shared a lot of fun times in the 6 years we worked together and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Fortunately I only faced him for a handful of deliveries in the nets but to say my strokes were guessy would be a testament to the speed and accuracy he possessed! RIP Spongey, sleep tight mate.
David Dawson, Family friend
former player for Twickenham and Oval Nondescripts cricket clubs.
Sue and I were devastated to hear the news about Mark, and are deeply moved by reading the condolences from others.
Shane Fernando & family, Spain
I played a lot of cricket with Mark at the Old Wimbledonians and Superstars events that we held. He really was a superstar! As already mentioned in numerous messages here, he was a down-to-earth guy who was a true competitor. You’d always want him in your team not just because he was a winner, but humble and modest about his talent which was why he was so loved and respected. Off the field, he was just the nicest guy you could meet. It was impossible to not like him. So tragic and unfair! I am devastated for everyone who knew Mark, and especially his lovely family – our thoughts and prayers are with you. RIP Spongey.
Will Dennis, Mickleham Cricket Club
Our thoughts are with Mark’s family and all at Effingham Cricket Club at this sad time. RIP.
Leigh Cricket Club @leigh_cricket
Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family, friends and teammates of Mark Collin of @EffinghamCC who sadly passed away this weekend.
Paul Kearney, friend and former Old Wimbledonians CC team mate
Although I played cricket with Mark for a number of years at OWCC, I first met him in the late 90s when he was giving up his time to help youngsters with special needs – something which epitomises his selfless and caring nature. I was fortunate enough to spend most of my 20s as his teammate after he introduced me to the OWs when I moved to London, and I cherish the memories of those Saturday afternoons and evenings, playing hard on the pitch and always sharing a beer and a joke afterwards. As many have already said, Mark was a fine cricketer but he was an even finer human being – I am sure that everyone who was fortunate enough to have spent time with him will have been enriched by the experience. He will be missed terribly by all who knew him. Mark was always smiling, never more so than when he married his beloved Dawn in North Wales. My heart goes out to Dawn, Sophie and George – whilst his passing leaves a hole in all of our lives, I cannot begin to imagine their loss. Spongey, I am proud to be able to have called you my friend.
Outwood Cricket Club @OutwoodCricket
We lost our club captain a month ago and understand your grief. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and team mates at this sad time.
Chris Churchley, Chair VCL
Please accept my condolences on behalf of the family of clubs that is the VCL for the shocking death of Mark Collin this weekend. I did not know him but the thought of a fellow cricketer passing playing the game we love fills me and all with whom I have shared the news with a great shock and sadness.

Tim Johnson, teammate and friend from OWs and Epsom
Where do you find the words to express this loss in a paragraph. I have been in disbelief since I found out. I also met him at Old Wimbledonians and played with him at Epsom. He was the spearhead of a seriously talented bowling attack back then. Genuinely sharp and prodigious seam saw him get the best players out. Good batsmen as well. We used to sit and discuss the game for hours over a beer or jug of snakebite back in those days. His advice and friendship meant a lot. His love of those silly flash computer games still stays with me for some reason. And his humour. One time he asked me why I wasn’t at nets last night. “Was at the Shania Twain concert in Wembley” I said. “that don’t impress me much” said Sponge. I hope his family find courage reading how universally he was loved and will be missed. So very very sad. God bless you Mark.
Sanderstead CC @SandersteadCC
Sorry to hear such sad news. Our thoughts and best wishes are with you.
Donna Potter, Friend
In a day spent mostly in tears, reading the wonderful messages on this condolences page has finally brought a smile to my face. To see how many people Mark touched with his kindness, generosity with his time, encouragement for young players, steely determination and passion for everything he did is a testament to the incredible person he was in all areas of his life. Words have failed me today as he left us far too early but I know I shall miss his enthusiasm, endless energy, friendship and smile forevermore. Love to all his family and friends at this saddest of times. R.I.P Marky Mark.
Darren Talbot, Managing Director, Twenty20 Cricket Company
I don’t think I ever got to meet him but it’s astonishing to read so many lovely words about one person. It’s always the nice ones isn’t it? So very sad. The cricket community is wonderfully tight at the right times and if anything positive can be taken out of this it’s the fact that the support has been so amazing.
David Kawan former Old Wimbledonians and Epsom CC player
Mark (Spongey) your infectious smile is what I will remember more than anything. A cheeky sort of grin that could lighten the mood anytime. I am proud to have known you and be your friend and I will cherish memories of you over the coming days, months and whenever I play sport until I die. I first met you at the OWCC back in 1999 and had the pleasure of playing cricket with you for many years there and Epsom. A truly proud team player you wore your heart on his sleeve and so supportive of all with that play hard, play fair and have a beer afterwards attitude. You thrived for competition in just about anything… yes anything. I loved the challenge of facing up to you in the nets or on the wicket or the games of 5 a side footy we played regularly. An uncanny knack of slotting goals with little effort. I am also proud to have nicknamed you ‘Spongey’ while at OWCC as you sweat way too much. Group hugs after you claimed a wicket were something! You didn’t complain or object to the name. I am numb at writing this mate. Tears are flowing for you big fella. Love you big man and we will all stay strong for your family. Till we meet again. STRIPS and family in NZ.
Stephen Chick, Old Rutlishians CC Secretary
On behalf of everyone at the Old Rutlishians, I would like to pass on my deepest sympathies to Mark’s family, friends and teammates at this extremely sad time. Our thoughts will be with you all as we step on to the field this weekend.
Tim Richards, Friend and Old Wimbledonians Teammate
Words really cannot begin to express the emotions felt at the moment. What do I say about my friend Mark? We immediately hit it off when playing together for the first time nearly 20 years ago and I, like all others expressing their condolences that knew and played with you, will never forget that first impression. That smile, the encouragement you gave to teammates, the sportsmanship, the dedication and the loyalty you always displayed are also testaments to the way you conducted your life as a family man, friend, colleague and teammate. I have so many fond memories of our wonderful Sunday XI seasons together. It always made me smile when I opened with the “dibbly dobblers” from the end with the largest boundary and you’d then bowl the second over and scare the living daylights out of the openers as the ball fizzed and sped past the bat. God forbid that there was an edge, the “slips” were aptly renamed 4 stoppers. What a weapon for any captain to be able to call on. Such was the quality of our batting in those days, you were rarely required to brandish the willow but we were reminded just how good you were when playing an internal “pairs” friendly. To your dismay, you drew me as a batting partner but with only 8 overs per pair you somehow managed to score a ton whilst I failed to get to double figures (again). Your incredible match winning innings with Colin against Ashtead already mentioned in a previous despatch is firmly embedded and part of Old Wimbledonians lore. All of us that played with you knew they were in the presence of a special man and a supremely talented competitor whenever you took the field or shared a beer after the game. You touched so many hearts and your family, friends and the cricketing community will miss you terribly.
Giles Henderson, school friend
I am absolutely shocked and devastated to have heard the news on Sunday about my friend and school team mate’s death. Mark, or Rusty as he was always called at school, was not only a fantastic cricketer and rugby player but an absolute gentleman off it, and a man of absolute integrity who always had time for everyone and never had a bad word to say about anyone, always a great asset in a team. He always picked people up when they were down and had an energy for life that rubbed off on others. I toured with him a number of times at school both at cricket and rugby and he continued to play for the old Georgians more recently in the cup competitions and I will cherish the memories we had playing sport together and having a drink afterwards. An absolute top bloke who will be sorely missed by all that knew him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this sad time for losing their husband, dad, brother and son at the peak of his life, way too soon. RIP Rusty.
Rob Lowe, friend
The cricket family have lost a true gent and great man, forever in our hearts, forever over our shoulder on a boundary walk mocking our attempts at nearest the flag, and forever sweating as soon as he donned his cricket shirt! Spongey mate, the pleasure was all mine!! Thanks to all the Effingham and Newdigate players for their efforts, they are greatly appreciated and must be remembered! Spongey would have done exactly what those boys did jumping in to try and help. He was just that selfless sort of bloke! RIP bud, never forgotten, forever in our hearts.
Ian Pinnock (Leigh CC)
Leigh CC would like to pass on our deepest condolences to all at Effingham CC and obviously Mark’s family. We are linked as clubs through Charlie Forbes and Caleb Whiteford who play for us on a Sunday and I know they have both been deeply moved and saddened by the events. If there is anything we can do at this time or in the future please do shout. The club and Mark’s family are in our thoughts and prayers. #cricketfamily God Bless
Lester Fernando, former school and team mate.
I was at school at St George’s with Mark from the age of 13. I toured South Africa with him in ’93 and we became cricket club mates at my home club, the Old Wimbledonians in the late 90s. We played well over 200 games together over the years but although cricket brought us together as teammates, he was far more than merely a teammate to anyone who knew him. He was the sort of guy who would knit a team together because he was loved by all and had such a warmth and fairness about him. When he came to OWCC, I was proud to see him settle in to the first team and be an ever present throughout his near decade there. Through talent, determination and brilliantly competitive spirit (he frightened an arrogant, former test fast-bowler into calling for a helmet while batting against him!) he won many a game for us but more importantly, he won the affection and respect of everyone who ever played with him. I am heartbroken for his family and friends that he has left us so soon but will always cherish the memories he gave us as a team mate and a mate.
Mark Coram, Ex East Fulham, Civil Service,
Kenley, Southern Rail and Kenley player and Umpire.
I like everyone in the wider cricket community was shocked and saddened by Mark’s untimely passing. I was for many years an umpire, first with Kenley and then with Southern Railway and Kenley. I recall him always cheerily greeting me, either at Effingham or at my ground. I was honoured to umpire him, as his demeanour was one most players should look up to. He was a credit to the club, and to cricket as a whole. Though I no longer umpire, I will honour the minutes silence at Warlingham’s ground this weekend, close to my home. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
Matt Selby, 1XI Captain, Ewhurst CC
I have just seen the extremely sad news about Mark, please pass on the condolences to everyone at ECC from us at Ewhurst Cricket Club. I can only say good things about Mark, a true gentleman who had a fantastic competitive spirit on and off the cricket pitch. It was a pleasure to have met and bowled against him, even when he was cutting me for 4 every ball. A great man who will be missed by everyone, RIP Mark. If we can assist in any way as a club please let me know, we are always here to help in any way. I will ensure that we have a minutes silence before our match on Saturday in memory of Mark.
David Dieterle, 1st XI Captain, Shepperton CC
It was with great shock and sadness we heard about the truly sad events that occurred on Saturday at Newdigate. All of us at Shepperton cannot quite believe this. It was only last week that we were playing against you and Mark was chatting away to our team as he did an umpiring stint during the game. Nothing any of us can say will help you as a club and his young family ease the pain at such an unexpected loss, but please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Our sincerest condolences and best thoughts are with all of you at Effingham and to Marks family. From all of us at Shepperton Cricket Club.
Sam Burge EMCC 1st XI Captain
Everyone at East Molesey CC would like to reiterate our deepest sadness for this terrible loss. All our adult sides will be adhering to 1 minute of silence before all games on Saturday in a mark of respect for Mark and his family at this devastating time. RIP.

Dreadful news. Condolences from all at Godalming Cricket Club also.
Nick Fox, Chairman, Old Wimbledonians Cricket Club
Mark was the kindest most generous family man anyone could wish to meet as well as being an exceptionally talented bowler and more than useful bat. He was widely loved and respected by all as is borne out by the no doubt hundreds of messages that will be written on his behalf. We missed him when he moved on from the Old Wimbledonians, and we will all miss him far more now. Mark leaves a beautiful family and many, many shocked friends, a true gentleman who knew the value of family and embodied the highest levels of sportsmanship. It was never true that they don’t make them like that anymore, Mark was a legend still in his prime.

I’m writing on behalf of Claygate Cricket Club to express the Club’s sadness on hearing of the untimely death of Mark Collin. We would be grateful if you could pass our condolences to Mark’s family. The cricketing community is closely knit. Our Club suffered the loss of its Clubhouse by fire a few months ago and local clubs, including Effingham, rallied around in support. The loss of Mark is a far greater tragedy. If there is anything our Club can do to support Effingham CC, and Mark’s family, in their time of need do please get in touch. For example, in donations for fund-raisers, memorial events etc. Claygate CC values its connection with clubs such as yours and is keen to support you. With our best wishes at this time of great sadness.

I don’t think I knew Mark – I may have bumped into him, I may even have played against him years, ago, but it doesn’t matter – Mark is the equivalent of the unknown soldier. One of hundreds of us who turn up for the love of the game every Saturday, whether as players, umpires, scorers, tea ladies, whatever. We go out to partake in the game, and we fully expect to be home to our families afterwards, albeit usually later than we promised – Mark just didn’t make it home at all. The whole cricket world is shocked and saddened by this tragedy, and will stand together in support of Mark’s family.
