A History of Women’s Cricket at ECC – by Paul Stroud, Chair
2017
It was the autumn when we first realised there was interest in cricket at the club, including amongst girls at Howard of Effingham school. I contacted Surrey and was put in contact with their participation officer, Vicki Howard. After attending a couple of Surrey County meetings regarding girls’ cricket, it was obvious that the whole area was growing and that clubs were at different stages of developing cricket for women. Having gauged interest at ECC, it became apparent that we would be interested in starting with softball cricket.
2018
At ECC we put a working party together and an email was sent to the membership in January asking for interest from the girls in a new Women’s team at the club. This was expanded when Beth Townend, Sports teacher at Manor House, forwarded the email to pupils to find their interest.
Our first training sessions were in June, followed by our first (inter-club) match on 29th June 2018 with 20 players. On 26th July we played our first external match, beating Westcott. On 26th August we took part in a Softball festival at Newdigate CC, losing to (a much younger) Newdigate team. At that stage, the majority of players were parents of our junior players.
2019
Three matches were played this year, against Westcott, Newdigate, and Capel, as well as two softball festivals at Godalming, though it started to become difficult to get numbers.
2020-2022
Amidst the pandemic, captain Pat Fewson led the team through a repeat of the the same three fixtures as the previous year, late that summer, while 2021 saw the entry into the Surrey Women’s Softball League for the first time. However, by 2022, the section fizzled out as numbers continued to steadily reduce.
2023
A revived team made a strong comeback in 2023, in part motivated by the strength and development of the girls graduating out of the junior section.
Spearheaded by Josh Farrell, Head of Women’s Cricket, and newly appointed Women’s Officer, Sarah Dougherty, ECC played their inaugural season in the Surrey Women’s Cricket League, as well as fielding a side for the Central Smash IT Softball League.
