President’s Award

The President’s Award of the Charles Sutton Trophy recognises outstanding service to the club over a substantial period of time. It is rightly understood to be the highest honour bestowed upon anyone associated with Effingham Cricket Club who gives up their time, energy and commitment to support the running or development of the Club for the benefit of our cricketing community.

This year Josh has enjoyed a highly successful season, winning the 2nd XI player of the year as the most prolific run scorer. 2022 also sees Josh receive the Charles Sutton trophy for outstanding service to Effingham Cricket club.

Josh has been awarded this highly prized recognition for his tenure as 2nd XI Captain from 20210 to 2015, as Sunday XI Captain from 2010 to 2014 and for his outstanding efforts in helping to improve cricket at the club at every level. We also recognise his tireless support in the maintenance of our ground over the years. 

On behalf of the entire club we would like to extend our warmest thanks to Josh for all his hard work and dedication and we are extremely grateful for his efforts

Anyone visiting the club on Friday evenings in the last three years would be hard pressed not to see (or hear) the 2018 Winner of the Presidents Award. Larger than life, and with a heart of gold, Colin Windsor has been an ever present behind the bar during those Friday evenings, persuading everyone to part with their hard earned to boost Club Coffers.

At other times, Colin is hard at work volunteering to keep the supply chain going from the wholesalers so that we have stock to sell throughout the week, getting his wife, Sam, to expand the confectionery stand to give a wide range of sugar products to our younger guests (and the Chairman).

Colin was instrumental in helping the Club raise £16,000 following the death of Mark Collin and his total commitment to helping raise funds for Mark’s family was second to none.

Outside of the club, Colin was responsible for encouraging a large group of people from his youngest son’s school to try Effingham, greatly contributing to the large group of cricketers that we have in the younger age groups, and ensuring that the club has a promising future.

More recently Colin has been watching some weekend matches, and of course, doing another stint behind the bar. A true club man who is enthusiastic about all things ECC and keen to help it grow and grow.

Taking into account the number of years Ray has been part of Effingham as player, Chairman and now President and the fact the award dates back to 1970, it is safe to say this award was long overdue.

There is some irony that the President has finally won the Presidents Trophy but when you consider the contribution that Ray has made across the breadth of his Effingham career and the impact he has had since taking over this position three years ago he couldn’t be more deserving.

Whether it is opening the club on Friday nights, organising parking, emptying bins or simply covering the length and width of the county watching each and every team over the season his position is far more than ceremonial – he is a true club man who has a genuine and passionate interest in all things Effingham CC.

Gary Holland has been presented with the President’s Award for the 2016 season, in recognition of his long standing, highly valued service as the Club’s groundsman. Although this might suggest that Gary’s role as head groundsman is only from April to September, like many other roles at the club, Gary is involved throughout every month of every year to ensure that the square, outfield and facilities are in tip top shape to allow us all to play or watch the game we love.

2016 has been a particularly challenging year. With our annual drainage issues, and a wet March/April period, it was difficult for Gary and his team to get onto the grounds to do any pre-season work – the roller would have quite simply sunk into the outfield before it got anywhere close to the square. We eventually got onto the outfield and had to do many hours of rolling, some of which was due to the latest damage done by joy riders, lovely people!

Once the sunshine finally came out Gary had to deal with the next set of miscreants, this time an obvious professional job, as the equipment garage was raided and a lot of equipment, including our main outfield mower, disappeared one Saturday night. “Bollards!” was just one of the words Gary felt like saying, but the new bollards, which Gary helped to install, should ensure that some of these issues should not recur in future seasons.

On behalf of everyone connected with the club, thanks Gary for all of your hard work and perseverance. Please do enjoy the off-season. “Is the scarifying done yet?”
