Chobham outclassed by Effingham 1st XI
Chobham 1st XI .v. Effingham 1st XI
Fuller’s Brewery Surrey County League – 2nd Division
Hovering near the top of the division, Effingham set about their task against second placed Chobham with great determination. Despite missing injured captain Adam Burlison, their batting line up looked capable of a 200 plus score, but unfortunately nobody in the top order got established. Useful contributions from opener Jake White (27), Mark Collin (24), Chris Fewson (20) and 17 from Matt Dixon took the visitors score to 130-7, which meant some concentration was needed to make good use of the remaining nine overs. Coming in at No.9, Jordan Bond saw Effingham through those final overs with a top score of 28 not out, ably assisted by Josh White and Alex Cooper, taking the visitors’ total to a respectable 168-9 in their 50 overs.
In reply, Chobham lost a couple of quick wickets and at 7-2, their No.3 was dismissed to a stunning catch by Nick Procter at gulley, making the target of 169 look a long way off. However, a certain amount of confidence was restored with the score gradually climbing to 34-2. When the third wicket fell without further addition to the total, it started a collapse of 6 wickets for just 19 runs, putting Effingham firmly in the driving seat with Chobham on 53-8. Nick Procter, who had come on in the 14th over, bowled with great accuracy and finished with outstanding figures of 6 for 7 in only 6.4 overs. He was well supported by some very tight bowling from Josh White, Matt Dixon, Chris Fewson and Mark Collin, whose collective 19 overs went for only 42 runs, the four of them picking up a wicket each. Jordan Bond took three excellent catches behind the stumps in a real team effort, which left the home side all out for 56. Having completed a 112 run victory, Effingham were able to celebrate a well-deserved, valuable 20 points, taking them to second in the table.
