6 wicket win for Effingham over John Fisher
Effingham 1st XI v Croydon Community (formerly John Fisher)
Fuller’s Brewery Surrey County League – 2nd Division
Effingham’s 1st XI made an excellent start to the 2016 season, following their promotion as champions of the 3rd Division last year, although the fixture list brought them face to face with familiar opponents, as Croydon had also got promoted in second place.
Croydon won the toss and decided to bat first on a flat, but slow wicket. Effingham made an early break through, Josh White bowling their opener with only one run on the board. His dominance continued with excellent figures of 4-15. Croydon never really recovered and with captain Adam Burlison claiming 3-17, they were all out for 83 after just over 30 overs.
A low target can often prove more difficult than it seems and Effingham’s openers both fell immediately after tea, leaving the home side on 1 for 2 after the first over. Some patient batting was necessary and both Nick Procter (22) and Mark Collin (29) took their time to settle the innings with an impressive partnership of 58. Matt Dixon (12) and Ed Cooper (8) continued with confidence and after just over 18 overs, at 84-4, Effingham eased to victory winning by 6 wickets.
