EFFINGHAM’S U15’s beat ASHTEAD U15’s by 1 run in a thrilling finish
EFFINGHAM’S U15’s beat ASHTEAD U15’s by 1 run in a thrilling finish at Headley’s ground on Friday evening (29.4).
Ashtead won the toss and decided to field first; the young E’s, despite being one short with only 10, posted a challenging 115 all out from their 20 overs. Theo Jones top scored with 28, which included some excellently timed shots and there were important contributions from Tom Weston, 18, Tom Marvin, 15 and Conor Foley, who made 14. James Rennison struck a quick 18 with three consecutive sixes, taking the Effingham total beyond 100.
In reply, Ashtead made a good start and looked the more likely winners, although Max McVeigh’s 4 overs for only 10, and Conor Foley’s 3-18 kept the result in doubt. Effingham never gave up and with their opponents only needing 4 runs in the last over and just 2 off the last ball, a win looked unlikely, until Tom Marvin, who had bowled very sensibly, scattered the stumps with his final ball, to take Effingham through to a very well-deserved victory by one run.
